DELHI

India’s capital city that will leave you speechless mostly because of its busy atmosphere, intense heat, and over crowdedness. Unforeseen circumstances left us having only one day in Delhi. Travelling for such a short time in India, we had to compromise somewhere and Delhi was left with the short end of the stick. We planned our trip to India using a local tour company called Creative India Journey and we highly recommend them as their tour guides and drivers were very friendly, kind and knowledgeable. We stayed at a hotel near the airport for the ease of meeting friends in a suburban town nearby, but it’s not recommended as the area is fairly sketchy. If possible, stay in Old Delhi where it’s packed with culture. Visit Chandni Chowk – one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi and get some shopping done. We started our day in Delhi by visiting the Qutub Minar, which is a 73m high tower built after the defeat of Delhi’s last Hindu kingdom. A definite must see because of its intricate architecture. You can easily spend a couple of hours here just taking in the history.

We then drove to India Gate, not to get confused with the one in Mumbai called Gateway of India. India Gate in Delhi is much like Arc de Triomphe in Paris; a memorial raised in honour of the Indian soldiers fighting for the British Army in World War 1. You can drive there and get some photo ops underneath it but only if you can get past the herd of locals trying to sell you stuff.

We later stopped in to see Humayun’s Tomb which is a mausoleum built in the 1560’s by the mughal emperor’s wife. Having being delayed in Delhi, we were only able to see a couple of the famous landmarks, but enough to get a taste of this crazy busy city.
At the end of the day, on our way to Jaipur, we stopped in at a friends house in Gurgoan, which is a small suburb just outside of Delhi. There’s nothing like having a close friend or family reside in a city you are visiting because it automatically feels like home!
